GOOD 1937 1st film release of A Star Is Born. I have seen and prefer the 1954 Judy Garland/James Mason 2nd version - but this is good and has interesting 1930's flavors including male and female street and stage dressage and more.

This is a recorded DVD rather than a mass-produced molded DVD, therefore it will not play on all players. It would not play on my machine. Bummer. I was looking forward to watching it.

Absolutely fantastic movie. Despite being over 80 years old, its perspective on Hollywood heartlessness and fan culture shows how little those things have changed (as another reviewer mentioned, the funeral scene is just brutal in how the fans treat Gaynor's character, all while claiming to love her). Gaynor and March are fantastic in their roles, and the ending is heartbreaking because you've come to love both of them, flaws and all.

More than worth the viewing - if only to see A.) a no-holds barred look at how grotesquely we 'fans' can be toward 'our favorites' (the funeral scene is the stuff of nightmares) and B.) the expression on Libby's (the late, great Lionel Stander) face when Vicky (Janet Gaynor) tells him her real name "Esther...Victoria...Blodgett."

Funny, surprisingly subtle, and slightly acidic. Worth a viewing and comparison to versions with Garland and, more recently, Streisand.

This is the 1937 version with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March.

very old fashioned method of story telling. more of a curiosity of how they wrote screenplays back then than a movie you can sit through. the emoting of the actors is very self concious and hammy. look at me im ACTING!
