Albright explores the history of fascism, a political ideology that arose out of the ruins of failed monarchies after World War I. The strongman dictator took the place of autocratic monarchs in the political spectrum. She starts with Mussolini, the original Fascist, proceeds to Hitler, and then a host of others since World War II. Her book also covers current leaders who subscribe to this ideology as the world sees the return of the "strong man" today. Her final chapters detail the conditions necessary for a return to fascism which can arise from either the far right or the far left. The audio version read by the author makes a lot of information more easily digestible as I listened to it while driving to and from work.
This is a phenomenally good book by someone who has seen so much and lived through various periods of political history of enormous import and differences in the world and has very accurate descriptions of all and of men of the main actors in these political events that have been enormously important to the world, freedom and democracy. The book has very well organized sections on all and gives equal coverage to all in a very methodical and rational description of each with additional personal notes where they apply and a very strongly principled position for human rights throughout. There are very insightful analyses of the psychology and background of many of the main actors in the descriptions and deep inquiry into the causes though that is not dwelt on unnecessarily long but long enough to be informative and with the experience, wisdom and knowledge of a very well educated, experienced and enormously gifted author who has contributed mightily to world peace for her entire life professionally and has lived through aspects of the subject matter of this book in real time in her life with her family too. I cannot recommend this book highly enough it is a work of enormous importance and a classic in the study of these issues it takes on and pulls apart intellectually to show the underlying mechanisms, causes and patterns of them and the need for eternal vigilance and self awareness for all people and nations to further the cause of human rights and democracy for a better world for all. These comments are entirely from my experience in listening to the author read her book, an additional bonus, and they are further entirely my own opinions on all aspects of the book, it's subject matter and this review. I would further recommend this book for study in the form of an ebook that would make searching topics much easier than any other format and intend to purchase the book in that form as well as likely a hard copy edition of it. The audio version is also quite tantalizing to have due to the voice of the actual author that I think adds enormously to the meaning of the work.
