Vocalist Johnny Hartman is best known for his album with John Coltrane, one of the greatest of collaborations between jazz musician and singer, as well as one of the most romantic albums ever made. For the casual fan, his reputation rests on that classic, but he recorded much more and this 2-disc, 38 song compilation is a great introduction to one of the smoothest of jazz singers. The earlier recordings are more big band style and sometimes marred by corny backing vocals. The second disc is his more mature and nuanced work. Aside from the Coltrane collaboration, there are also songs with Dizzy Gillespie, Errol Garner, and the Perez Prado Orchestra. Hartman continued recording until his death in 1983.
