Tana Hoban's "Black & White" and "Black on White" use many of the same high contrast images, which are especially suitable for newborns. With both books there are no words, this is great for a child to clearly observe the images and it provides storytelling opportunities for parents. One of the main differences is how the child is meant to interact with each book. "Black & White" is accordion style, and it can be left to stand on its own, so the child can engage with the images on their own and at their own pace. "Black on White" reads much like a regular flip book and the child must interact with the parent. These picture books are fantastic for newborns and young infants!
