Ponderous thriller that gives good insight into what the 1980s were like in Soviet Russia. There are multiple leads/betrayals to track and macabre, lingering shots of the three victims' heads, who had their faces removed. Underneath there's a decent love story, with both man and woman attempting to get each other out of Soviet Russia and into the freedom of the West. History note: if you wondering why, like I did, the police detective Renko jams a pencil in the partially turned dial of the rotary phones as he conducts conversations, it's to avoid listening devices on the line. As noted, this is set back in the 1980s.
