Bogart is kinda laid back and stoic in this film in comparison to Edward G. Robinson who is all over the map with braggadocio, stupidity, fear, superstition, brutality, ignorance, etc. These two are at the heart of this great crime film of ex-soldier meeting waning crime boss. A huge number of the characters will not make it to “the end.” Claire Trevor won the Oscar for best supporting actress in her role as the old mostly drunken aging girl friend of the waning crime boss Robinson.
