Some of the details are shattering, like that Douglas Haig and other commanders were reduced to bragging about the quantity of their casualties because there was otherwise nothing (shades of the "body count" in Viet Nam). Thanks to the author for digging out the stories of objectors and pacifists and relating them to the labor movement. Bertrand Russell comes off smelling pretty sweet, for sure; what a guy! I could have done with less Pankhurts (not 'fewer') but overall I highly recommend this compelling read, masterfully edited by Tom Engelhart.
