This novella shows Nesbo’s range as an author as he departs from the high strung psycho-mysteries of his Harry Hole series. Second in a trilogy of what appears to be a theme of hit men seeking redemption, the story is about an aimless, but kind fixer for an Oslo crime boss who wants to escape from his life, which has recently been rendered meaningless. Above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, the harsh, unceasingly lit summer landscape (and the reindeer!) of Finnmark drives the story and shapes the final outcome; it’s a character in the plot, beautifully rendered in luminous sky, sea, and heather-covered rock.
