Evelyn and Daniela squeeze in their favorite games and visit familiar spaces during one last day before Evelyn moves out of the neighborhood. Sonia Sanchez’ digital illustrations use brush strokes, stamped patterns, and collage elements to show the rich details of the apartments the girls have spent so much time in together. Author Meg Medina is a past Newbery Medalist and she deftly describes both small moments and big feelings as the friends say goodbye. The last page shows the narrator Daniela as a young woman, still in that same apartment she grew up in, looking at a box of mementos, a reassuring suggestion that the two “mejor amigas, número uno best friends” found a way to stay in touch.
