At first I thought this was another pretentious literary fiction novel with a lot of unlikeable characters, muddled plot, changing narrative/POV aimed more at getting an award than anything else, a three-star at best, but toward the end I appreciated it more. I think it's because I could see character development/progress, there was indeed a plot and in the end I could be sympathetic to Juliet. A lot of people are complaining about the political arguments the couple had and the nautical jargon, but I think they serve a purpose to show one of many ways the couple had drifted apart and in the latter case, to show the many things Juliet (or any sailor) has to know/learn, especially in crisis. I found myself wishing i had bought a copy vs. borrowing one so that I could mark up the quotable passages. At first I thought this was another pretentious literary fiction novel with a lot of unlikeable characters, muddled plot, changing narrative/POV aimed more at getting an award than anything else, a three-star at best, but toward the end I…

Look, I'm all for representation, but I think the controversy over this book because the author is not a native Mexican/of Mexican descent is a bridge too far. This is an extremely well researched and well written book that is compelling from the first page to the last, and anything that can shed light on the plight of some migrants can only help, even if it's a fictionalized account. I think we need to have a broader discussion on whether books can have merit irrespective of the author's background IF the subject matter is treated accurately and with the respect it deserves (or doesn't, if it's an infamous person or horrific actual event).Look, I'm all for representation, but I think the controversy over this book because the author is not a native Mexican/of Mexican descent is a bridge too far. I really like Alex Kava books; they're good thrillers for vacation and the like. This one was predictable, but I was so entertained, I didn't care.

All the award nominations and glowing comments about this book are completely spot-on. I know nothing of the modern Native American experience, and this book spells it out pretty well, through the background and introduction and via the characters' experiences. The writing is spectacular; I look forward to more of Tommy Orange's work.
The only reason I gave this book three stars is that the story arc just didn't do it for me. I don't expect a happy ending or likable, perfect characters -- in fact, I loved that most of the characters weren't in this book. I just think a more compelling story would have cemented this for me.
I selected this for book club and several members said it was too dark for them. I've read far darker and didn't this was that bad, but that said, do read what it's about and be aware of the historical plight of Native Americans; this book would be disingenuous if it were anything but.All the award nominations and glowing comments about this book are completely spot-on.
